Chapter 11

Jeso visited the site where the Guild parked their vessel. Forensic teams swept away anything of real value. He did manage to get a reasonable description of one of the members of the crew. Unfortunately, the bodies of the sentries wouldn’t do them any good. None of them appeared on regular Olarin census databases.

Meaning they couldn’t be traced back to their starting point.

First time they do their jobs is the one time I needed them to make a mistake.

Jeso checked out the site where they found the body of the religious nut job. Of course no one in the area saw anything. Getting involved with a murder investigation didn’t help any regular citizen. He asked a few questions just to be sure. Even offering compensation failed to reveal anything new.

Roaming the city only provided him with something to do while he waited on the ship requisition. He didn’t want Hendo to think he just sat around. Taking to the street meant ambition, a desire to get the job done. After finding himself on the outskirts of his profession for so long, optics mattered.

If not to Hendo, then anyone else who might need an agent for a special job. This project might’ve been under the radar, but Jeso’s experience suggested someone would find out about it. They always did. No matter how much an officer or politician attempted to stifle the truth, something leaked.

I might do it myself if it works out well.

The Minister of Transportation boasted quite the house in the middle of an affluent district. Tight security kept the entries locked down. Jeso’s identification barely got him past the checkpoints. Actual soldiers stood guard around the perimeters, which explained why nothing bad ever happened up there.

It took him the better part of an hour before he found himself waiting with a soldier at the minister’s front door, waiting for someone to answer.

“This how you spend every day?” Jeso asked. “Escorting people around the area?”

“I’m new, sir. So yes, pretty much.”

Jeso nodded. “What about when people leave? Do you ever escort them?”

“Only if they ask.”

The door opened. Minister Bazh answered it himself. He looked between the two of them then waved Jeso through. “Hendo told you were coming,” he closed the door on the guard. “Thank you. I suppose you are discreet?”

“I am,” Jeso replied. “Maybe you can tell me what she was doing.”

“Aiding me in an attempt to procure information on the Guild.”

“What kind?” Jeso asked. “I’m assuming you were trying to set them up.”

Bazh glared at him. “Discreet and exceptionally candid, I suppose.”

Jeso nodded. “We’re talking about your daughter. Unless you don’t care about her, you’ll indulge my honesty. I’m not going to be gentle about what we’re dealing with here. I need to know some things.”

“Yes, I’m trying to extort them for some provisions about trade.”

“I see.” Jeso bit the inside of his cheek to keep from smirking. “And we don’t take enough from them? We just had to do a little more? I’m not sure I see the point of pressing them.
